Looking Back, Again

As I look back over my 73 years of life I see many highlights, some significant stumbles and very few regrets. Looking forward into the future I have one haunting fear: the state of the nation that my generation bequeaths to our grandchildren might be one of a country in decline.

Dear friends,

coverImagine the America you want your children and grandchildren to inherit from your generation. Imagine an America that is fully living up to the principles enshrined in her founding documents: freedom, equality, justice and democracy. Imagine an American political system in which elected representatives seek the common good rather than personal gain and ideological supremacy. Imagine an America that is universally respected by her international counterparts as a beacon of peace and a world leader in education, economic development, civil rights, healthcare and democracy.

Now compare your imagined America to our nation today. Where are we strong and where do we need to change? I’ve completed this exercise and discussed it with people around the world and across the United States. You can read my conclusions and the feedback I received from Americans and from our neighbors abroad in my new book The Idea of America: Are the Principles Eroding or Enduring. The book can be ordered at http://ow.ly/1VGdQ3.

The next step is to restructure the PeoplesVision blog so that it is more welcoming to conversation. In the meantime, please let me know about the America you envision by visiting the pub at http://peoplesvisionusa.com/the-pub-reader-feedback/
