I'll just take on the first issue 'stop the privitazation of education'. It is my belief that most parents just want their kids to get the best education possible. We might hope and wish that public schools should be the preferred choice, but when those public schools are failing, who can blame parents for seeking out alternatives. I have seen private schools proliferate in recent years, and it is readily apparent that is because parents are dis-satisfied with the perfromance of the public schools in their cities and neighborhoods. This situation has dragged on and on for many years. Frustration sets in, and thusly parents look to charter schools and private schools, and I don't blame them !

Mr. Prescott has laid out the issues very clearly, in a way that those on the left and on the right will surely agree.

Every time Thomas Friedman is being interviewed on TV, it's an interview I listen to from beginning to end. And like you Bill, I agree w/ Mr. Friedman's proposed strategy for our President. The last lines in your last paragraph in your posting jumped out at me as I read it:
"I believe that Americans would support a leader who runs against the current of both his own party and the opposition. As Friedman concluded “Go big, Mr. President. You will win, and so will America.”
That makes so much sense to me, especially considering the historically low poll numbers of Congress as of late. Americans are pretty much sick of both Republicans AND Democrats, and are seeking something or someone to rise above the fray. For me Obama is that "someone" and always has been.

Bill,

I agree with Krugman. Does the President? The divide between intellectually honest Republicans and Democrats is equal opportunity verses equal outcome. This is why President Obama sets the wrong example. He either doesn’t understand the divide or he intentionally lies about it. Republicans are no less compassionate for the poor than the rich. Both sides deserve an honest and open discussion of ideas, yet he continues to blame the budget struggle on my desire to keep the downtrodden down. By doing so, the President polarizes the country more each day.

Hope ya'll have great Thanksgiving

Thank you, Bill, for this trenchant report on the current trends of fear-bating in the Republican party—a party that proudly claims most of its participants are Christian. One thing I find shocking is how many of these so-called Christians are content to tell bold-faced lies and foment hate in the name of maintaining luxuries for themselves and the very few already privileged.
As a professor of world religions and multi-faith minister, I am stunned into silence (almost, thank God!).
If Jesus lived in the 21st century, I'm wondering how quick he would accuse as "cheats and thieves" the poorest among us, foster children, the sick, the widowed, the imprisoned, the social outcasts, the unfamiliar stranger? I wonder if Jesus could keep his hands from flipping over the tables of those (mostly) men who'll do anything—even break the laws of the land—to preserve present and future personal profit over a viable future for all living beings.
And even if Obama were a Muslim instead of an unabashedly proud Christian, would not Jesus consider him family?
Obama hate-mongerers truly puzzle me. Where's the Christian love in all of this? Where's the commitment to caring for one another? Where's the covenant to love our neighbors as ourselves...no matter how unfamiliar they are to us?
Again, thanks for inviting all of us to wake up!

P.S. I forgot to share with you and my readers a funny thing my nephew wondered aloud yesterday. He asked, "If you have a right wing, don't you need a left wing to fly?" I smiled and nodded while thinking to myself: "These right-wingers are indeed missing a wing but it's their lies that cannot fly."
I'm hoping that more of us will resist believing the lies of this flagrantly dishonest wing of the party. More will be revealed come next November.

Neither side is un-American. The gridlock is what makes our Constitution the most perfect plan for government to date! I support the tea party, because I believe Americans are taxed enough already and that our government’s job is to assure our chance at individuality. My best understanding is that progressives believe the government exists to level the playing field by ensuring social, economic, etc equality.

I read your blog attempting to better understand your point of view,…and to test my own. Demonstrating proud partisanship doesn’t justify its position on either side of the isle. Consider that in this piece, like others on your blog, one could easily substitute names of republicans with names of democrats. There are crooks, liars, and demagogues on both sides

Enjoyed your blog and especially like the little side-bar Truth-O-Meter! I mean, has Bill O’Reilly ever told a 100% full truth? Republicans lie so much (i.e. Speaker of the House wailing that he had stuck his neck out only to find the goal post had been moved.) that they actually believe the drivel from the ulstra right.

Wow Bill, you and Frank Rich are definitely on the same page! He must have read your posting before he wrote his article in the New York Magazine! You are both spot on, especially regarding the GOP/Tea Baggers being united by a common set of principles and the fact that the Dems lack the values-based glue to bind them together. I have been yelling that at my TV for months! And of course emailing my Senators and Congressmen that same sentiment. The good news is, Pres. Obama has been on fire lately, and as a Democrat, I'll join the chorus and say "It's about time!" I think he finally got it after the debt ceiling debacle, like a slap in the face, realizing that the Repubs simply want him to fail without a care to the commonwealth of the country. So, the President has taken a hard left and is giving me a sense of renewed "HOPE".

Your latest blog is so perfectly right on target that I need to send it to some of my right-winger associates. I would say friends, but I just can't be friends with people who avidly watcch Sean Hannity and O'Reilly. As the Irish would say, "Jaysus!"

An interesting article in last week's New Yorker pointed out that xenophobic right wingers would rather see their entire country go up in flames rather than see someone who they thought didn't deserve any help (aka any one of color or ethnicity) get anything more than what they themselves might or could get. If I can't get help, then surely those people can't either. A totally selfish, self-centered, isolationist point of view. How did we get to this point?! And how did the Dems' backbones turn to jelly?!
